Country Club of Landfall

The largest gated community in Wilmington, Landfall is home to some of the finest properties and lavish amenities in the area, boasting two championship golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye, all located only a few short minutes from Wrightsville Beach.

Formerly known as Pembroke Jones Park, or Pembroke Park, Landfall’s earliest known owner was Pembroke Jones (1858-1919), a millionaire rice broker and a railroad investor known for such a lavish lifestyle that he and his wife Sarah were thought by many to be the inspiration for the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses.” Used originally as a hunting preserve, the property was home to a large mansion, or lodge, constructed in 1909, and the site of legendary gatherings with friends and other prominent members of local society.

Four decades later, after Jones’ death, his granddaughter inherited the property and in the 1970’s, she and her husband founded Landfall development Co. The name paid tribute to the belief that Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano had landed on or near the site during his 1524 voyage up the Atlantic Seaboard for King Francis I of France. The vessel that you see in the Landfall logo represents Verrazano’s ship off the coast. New Hanover County officials approved the project in 1984, with construction well under way in 1986. The first clubhouse opened in May 1989, followed by two complete golf courses, a sports center, and a non-denominational chapel.

Born and educated in Wilmington, Mark Batson has considerable roots tied to the area. After growing up in Carolina Beach, Mark decided to pursue a BA in History at UNCW. He then turned his "study of people and the past" into a passion for bringing people and families together.

Mark believes, quite simply, that there is nothing more important than spending time with those you love. Finding a sense of place and appreciating time together in a functionally beautiful environment is what gives his own life meaning. Specializing in waterfront properties, including the communities of Landfall, Figure Eight, and Wrightsville Beach, his clientele includes current and former CEOs and families from major metropolitan markets in North Carolina and the Northeast.

In addition to acting as an agent at Sotheby's International Realty, Batson is also the owner & CEO of the national award-winning design + build firm, Tongue & Groove. In the spring of 2021, his firm was awarded the title of "National Custom Home Builder of the Year" by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)  - The most prestigious title a design-build firm can receive in the United States of America. Homes that his firm has designed and built have shattered MLS sales records year over year, specifically in 2017 and 2018, with the highest ever residential property sales in New Hanover County. Today, Mark resides in Wrightsville Beach with his family of five. His extensive experience in real estate, design, and local knowledge ensures his clients will receive comprehensive advice and guidance, whether buying, selling, building, or renovating.
